Everything changes, or so it seems.
Each year that passes is full of unexpected changes – internationally, across our nation, in our families and lives. Modern life can be bewildering.
The Bible tells us of One who never changes: God is unchangeable. He called himself ‘I Am Who I Am’ (1) – this means that he exists, he always exists, and he depends for his existence on nothing and no-one. He never changes.
In the same way the Bible says, ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever’ (2). As the Son of God he is unchangeably perfect; unchangeably loving; unchangeably gracious; unchangeably just and fair. He will never water-down his standards for judging our sin.
But Jesus is, as a hymn puts it, ‘unchangeably faithful to save’ (3). He laid down his perfect life, dying on the cross at Calvary, and rising again, to pay the penalty for our sins and to bring us new life. And he promised, ‘Whoever comes to me I will never drive away’ (4).
You may be bewildered by the whirl of changes in our world. You may wonder who or what you can rely on. But you can certainly rely on Jesus. Call on the unchanging God to forgive all your sin – not because you deserve it, but because Jesus died for sinners. Trust in him to save you and keep you for ever. ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ (5).
Yesterday, today, for ever,
Jesus is the same;
all may change, but Jesus never,
Glory to His name! (6)
